No signups has two readings

A diagram titled 'No Signups Has Two Readings' contrasting 'no demand' with 'no reach' as two explanations for zero signups that look identical on a dashboard, with a note that building got easier while reach did not.

Either nobody wants it, or the people who would want it did not see it. From a dashboard those look identical, and as builders we need to know which one is true.

More than half of what moves on the web is now automated, so a raw visit count carries crawlers and agents that were not going to sign up. I separate bot traffic from human traffic in my own site analytics for three reasons:

  • The combined number is not something I can act on.
  • I want to see how far search traffic has fallen.
  • I am measuring how often AI assistants fetch my pages, which is my GEO number.

Many have said the only constant is change and this era in IT seems to represent this more than any in my memory. The talk that everyone is now a manager of agents and a product builder got me thinking about why building keeps getting easier while reaching customers does not, and what reach even takes when AI assistance has increased content output.

If you have an audience that already trusts you, that network may sign up to show support, but the product still has to give them a reason to stay.

Reach gets people to the page. Trust gets them to sign up. Neither one tells you whether the product is good.

Here are some questions I would ask before I read anything into a launch with no takers:

  • How did people find it? If I cannot name the channel, the result is about my traffic.
  • How much of that traffic was human?
  • Did the people who showed up already know me? If so, I am measuring reputation.
  • Where do people with this problem already gather, and do I have standing there?
  • If I have no reach yet, is my first project the product or the audience?

Building the thing is now based on your token budget, but earning a place where your buyers hang out still takes years.

If you have run a demand test that came back empty, what was the channel supposed to be?
